Productivity

August 14/15, 2010

I love days where I don't have much, if anything, planned but it turns out incredibly productive. Saturday was a day like that. The only thing Austin and I had planned was a garage sale in the morning and then Steak Night that evening. However, my 6 year old niece, Ariah, changed all that.

She came over in the morning to have a lemonade stand at our garage sale. About a 8 sold cups of lemonade later, she got tired and wanted to go in and watch a movie. After Beauty and the Beast and half way through Cinderella, she came back outside and asked if she could "do the weeds". Ariah is a strange child. She LIKE weeding. She also likes to clean up and organize things. I came downstairs Saturday night to find that she had cleaned up the foam pieces that Polo had torn from the mattress in the dogs room. She does things like that alot without even being asked. Like I said, strange.

Anyway, I set up Ariah with her gardening gloves and hand shovel and then decide that if she's going to weed in one flower bed, I may as well tackle the jungle that has overgrown the flower bed on the other side. Seriously, it was a horrific mess. The weeds were so tall they covered the hose cart, hiding it entirely. A complete mess. So, at 1:30 in the blazing heat, Ariah and I were pulling weeds with intermitent breaks to spray ourselves off with the hose.

This turned in to a mini makeover for the front of the house. After packing up left over garage sale junk (and after Ariah's mom came to pick her up), Austin and I headed to Home Depot for a mulch, some stones to boarder the flower bed, and a weed eater. Thank you Pratts for the gift card (although, we didn't buy Tim power tools as you suggested, sorry). Of course, we spread out all the mulch and set up the stones only to realize that we are 4 stones short and need more mulch so Saturday night after Steak Night we return to the Depot for more mulch, 4 more stones....and I've also decided we need more solar lights and some plants too :)

After another afternoon on Sunday spent doing yard work, here's the final product. Mind you, compared to the gorgeous work of landscaping art in my neighbor's yard, it's not much. But at least it's no longer a jungle filled with ants and crickets! And once my cute little Hostas start to grow, it should actually look pretty nice :)
